Fire hose reels

AS/NZS 1221 sets out requirements for fire hose reels used as first-response fire-fighting equipment in buildings and workplaces.

It covers aspects of the design, construction and performance of fire hose reel assemblies.

For FireTest, AS/NZS 1221 sits alongside NZS 4503:2005, which provides the broader New Zealand framework for the selection, installation, inspection and maintenance of hand-operated fire-fighting equipment.

What Does AS/NZS 1221 Cover?

AS/NZS 1221 establishes requirements for fire hose reel assemblies and their components.

These requirements help ensure that a compliant hose reel is capable of delivering water in a controlled and reliable manner when required.

The standard deals primarily with the equipment itself, while other standards and regulatory requirements address matters such as installation, location, inspection and ongoing maintenance.

What Is a Fire Hose Reel Used For?

A fire hose reel provides a readily available supply of water that can be used to tackle certain types of fire during their early stages.

They are primarily intended for fires involving ordinary combustible materials where water is an appropriate extinguishing medium.

Fire hose reels should not be used on fires where the application of water would create an additional hazard, such as some electrical, flammable-liquid or cooking-oil fires.

What Is Checked During a Fire Hose Reel Inspection?

A fire hose reel inspection considers the overall condition of the equipment and whether it remains accessible and ready for use.

Checks can include the condition of the hose, reel, nozzle, valve, connections and other components.

The hose should be checked for visible deterioration, damage or other defects that could affect its operation.

The reel should also operate correctly and allow the hose to be deployed as intended.

Why Is Water Flow Important?

A hose reel needs to do more than simply unwind.

It must be capable of providing an appropriate supply of water when required.

Functional testing helps identify issues such as restricted flow, problems with valves or nozzles, damaged hose or other faults that may prevent the hose reel from operating effectively during an emergency.

Does a Fire Hose Reel Need Regular Servicing?

Yes. Fire hose reels form part of the hand-operated fire-fighting equipment covered by the inspection and maintenance framework of NZS 4503:2005.

Regular inspection and servicing help confirm that the hose reel remains accessible, identifiable and operational.

A hose reel may remain untouched for long periods, which makes periodic inspection particularly important.

What About the Location of a Fire Hose Reel?

Fire hose reels need to be positioned so they can be readily located and accessed when required.

The surrounding area should not be obstructed by stored goods, furniture or other equipment.

Appropriate identification and signage also help occupants locate the hose reel quickly during an emergency.

The suitability of the actual installation involves requirements beyond the manufacture of the hose reel itself.

Can a Fire Hose Reel Be Used on an Electrical Fire?

Water and energised electrical equipment can present a serious hazard.

A hose reel should not be used where applying water would expose the person operating it to an electrical risk.

The appropriate fire-fighting equipment depends on the type of fire and the hazards present.
T

his is one reason workplaces may have several different types of fire-fighting equipment available rather than relying on a hose reel alone.

What Can Cause a Fire Hose Reel to Fail an Inspection?

Problems can include damaged or deteriorated hose, leaking connections, defective valves or nozzles, difficulty deploying the hose, inadequate operation or physical damage to the reel.

Access can also be an issue.

A functioning hose reel that has been obstructed or cannot be readily reached may not provide effective protection when it is needed.

Defects identified during an inspection should be assessed and appropriate corrective action taken.

Is AS/NZS 1221 the Servicing Standard?

Not by itself. AS/NZS 1221 primarily establishes requirements for the fire hose reel equipment itself.

For the wider selection, installation, inspection and maintenance of hand-operated fire-fighting equipment in New Zealand, NZS 4503:2005 is particularly relevant.

The standards therefore have different but complementary roles.

Where Does AS/NZS 1221 Fit With Other Fire Standards?

The key standards covered within our FireTest Standards Library are:

NZS 4503:2005 — Hand-operated fire-fighting equipment
AS/NZS 1841 — Portable fire extinguishers
AS/NZS 3504 — Fire blankets
AS/NZS 1221 — Fire hose reels

Together they provide useful guidance around the common hand-operated fire-fighting equipment found in New Zealand workplaces and buildings.
