Frequently Asked Questions
What medical equipment needs
to be tested?
Medical equipment used for patient diagnosis, monitoring or treatment may require inspection and testing.
The requirements depend on the equipment, how it is used and the environment in which it operates.
This can include both mains-powered and battery-operated medical equipment used within a clinical setting.
How often does medical equipment need testing?
Testing intervals depend on the equipment, its use, manufacturer recommendations and associated risk.
AS/NZS 3551 does not require every medical device to be tested annually.
However, organisations such as the Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners (RNZCGP) recommend that medical equipment is tested, verified and calibrated annually to help ensure accuracy.
What is AS/NZS 3551?
AS/NZS 3551 provides requirements and guidance for the management, testing and maintenance of medical electrical equipment throughout its service life.
It provides a framework for equipment safety, performance verification, testing intervals, maintenance and record keeping.
What is a Body Protected Area (BPA) & AS/NZS 3003?
A Body Protected Area is a patient area with additional electrical safety requirements designed to provide increased protection where medical electrical equipment may be used on a patient.
AS/NZS 3003 sets out the electrical requirements for patient areas, including protection by 10mA RCDs, identification of patient-area outlets and regular inspection and testing requirements.
Does every consultation room need to be a Body Protected Area?
No. Whether a room requires Body Protected Area protection depends on its intended clinical use and the medical electrical equipment used within it.
An electric examination bed or ECG does not, by itself, mean every consultation room must be a BPA.
Do medical RCDs require regular testing?
Yes. RCDs protecting patient areas require routine testing to verify correct operation and continued protection.
ClinicCheck can test and record medical RCD performance as part of patient area compliance testing, providing clear documentation of the results.
The ClinicCheck team is always happy to discuss any questions you may have. We can provide practical guidance to help your practice understand and meet its medical equipment and patient area compliance requirements.
